The Double Meaning
Sometimes a trip involves traveling in a plane, train, or automobile, and sometimes a trip is something that happens when a welcome mat rolls up or some object is left carelessly in the path of others. Things can go well most of the time, and then they do not, and that can get frustrating if problems are not addressed…

Vaccinate!
There is a really interesting website, called Microbe.tv, on which you will find links to various shows about medical and biological science. Through 2020, an informative, non-political resource featuring subject matter experts was invaluable for finding out what was going on at any point along the pandemic timeline. They continue to bring weekly clinical updates about vaccinations, therapies, and other topical information, featuring Dr. Daniel Griffin:
No LUV for SWA
To place a bow on the tale we discussed during this episode, closing one’s Rapid Rewards account is not an easy matter, on top of the passenger troubles Dan described and the inaction on the part of SWA staff. As it turns out, while you can sign up for a Rapid Rewards account almost by accident, in order to close your account you may call the conact phone number listed in your Rapid Rewards profile (“to make changes, call…”) and after waiting anywhere from 11 to 67 minutes (surprise: waited 11 minutes for this answer, did not wait the estimated 67 minutes suggested by the computer voice), we learn that closing an account actually requires a different phone number…
It’s entirely possible that other people are feeling the same disappointment for Southwest Airlines, for various reasons (though passengers on Southwest certainly do make headlines now and then).
Southwest Airlines cancels and delays 1000s of flights. Again. (SFGate, 26 June 2021)
Next time there’s a commute between LAS and PHX, we’ll be trying out JSX to see how far a few more dollars will go for a better customer/traveler experience.
(This is not an advertisement, merely foreshadowing a future episode about this short, but not-infrequent travel adventure)
CasaNunzia Update
We talked about more CasaNunzia during this episode, mostly about some of those other trip hazards that we all encounter closer to home (and sometimes inside our homes, but hopefully not too often).
So often, there is a problem that we can identify, and we can tell someone about the problem, and the person we talk to has no power to make a useful, lasting change. There are always reasons for this, some good, some not great, but when you encounter the same issues in the same and different places time and time again, frustration can add up…
Have you ever seen
A mat on the floor in an entryway which can roll up and trip someone, especially someone using a cane or walker or with other mobility concerns?
An automatic door which opens with the press of a large button (usually showing the international symbol for handicap access), but which then closes, heavily, without regard for someone who may have, say, gotten tangled up with a rolled-up mat on the floor…
A door to a restroom which is far too heavy to open if using a cane, walker, or other assistive devices
A hallway or doorway which is too narrow to accommodate a wheelchair?
A light pole mounted in a sidewalk such that a wheelchair or other assistive devices cannot pass by?
A support column in a building too near temporary cubical structures and an internal wall, such that it is impossible to pass through in a wheelchair or with other assistive devices?
The list goes on and on (would you care to add some?)
These are actual issues, some encountered frequently, some only rarely, but each is a real story, and there are so many more of these. It’s as if those responsible for deploying these various problems and issues, have never interacted with the people who are so negatively impacted by their decisions.
These are the sorts of things motivating the CasaNunzia project…
